Can a hotel be responsible for a lost coat?

Hi,
I am a pianist at a local hotel near where I live in southern england. on saturday night, i left my north face fleece behind by accident as I was leaving in a hurry. 5 minutes after i left, i was in a cab and i had a train to catch so i immediately called the hotel and spoke to the receptionist, (the coat rack where i left it was immediately in front of the reception desk, it isn’t a large hotel). I said "this is adam the pianist; i left my fleece behind" she replied "yes you did" and I said "would it be possible for you to put it aside for me? i’ll be back monday to collect it." She said "yes". Yesterday (Monday) when I came to perform again and looked for my coat, it was nowhere to be found. The receptionist who was working Saturday night won’t be back in until tomorrow, so I don’t know if she put it in a different place, but if she didn’t, I want to know what I am entitled to from the hotel. In my non-legal-opinion, the hotel accepted responsibility as soon as they said they would put it aside for me and are therefore liable. Please, someone help me.
I have never signed anything, and I haven’t seen anything on the walls either. All i know is that I asked them if they could specifically stick my coat aside for collection 48 hrs later, and when I showed up asking for it, it wasn’t there.
Furthermore,I should probably mention: this is a 4-star hotel that charges well upwards of £200 per night. nothing at all saying "we are not responsible for lost items or clothing".
